Class Descriptions
Beginning piano…
Is for students of all ages just starting piano or transfer students who are in primer to level 2 lesson books. Concepts covered include posture at the piano, hand position, fingering, learning how to read and play simple melodies with one hand, and then developing coordination to play simultaneously with two hands, usually melodies with accompaniment. At the end of beginning piano, students are able to play hands together with some hand position changes.
Intermediate piano…
Is typically for students who have studied piano for three or more years and are playing moderately complex performance level repertoire with two hands. Intermediate piano focuses on repertoire designated as levels 3 through 7 or intermediate by the publisher and on technique such as scales, arpeggios, Hanon, Czerny, as well as the use of pedals. There is also an emphasis on improving expression and artistry at this level. (Examples of intermediate classical and contemporary music are Bach Minuets; Bach two-part inventions in C major, F major, etc.; Mozart K545, 1st Movement; Haydn Six Easy Sonatas; Beethoven Moonlight Sonata, 1st Movement; Martha Mier Jazz, Rags & Blues; Broadway music from Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, etc.)
Advanced piano…
Is typically for students who have studied piano seriously for six years or longer and have accomplished a high level of finger dexterity and performance. Technique, artistry and performance are emphasized. (Examples of advanced classical music are level 8 and up or music designated as advanced by the publisher and include more difficult sonatas by Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn; more difficult Bach two- and three-part inventions; Bach preludes and Fugues; works from the romantic period by Chopin, Liszt, etc.; contemporary works by Debussy, Gershwin, Joplin, etc.)
