Positive Role of Music Education
What are the benefits of music education?
Music is a language. Through the process of listening to and subsequently learning how to play a musical instrument, students learn skills that are transferable to many areas in life. Examples of these transferable skills include learning a foreign language, understanding the concept of fractions, learning computer skills, listening, communicating, and, in general, being more sensitive to the rhythms of everyday life.
Learning a musical instrument teaches the student life skills such as perseverance, patience, dealing with frustration, and getting along with others. The required routine of practicing regularly instills self-discipline, which frequently results in a more focused study of other subjects. Working with a teacher one-on-one, or in a group setting, on a regular, consistent basis establishes and builds trust. In our busy society, this can be a very unique, therapeutic and valuable experience. In addition, many studies have shown that studying a musical instrument improves math, verbal and other academic test scores.
